WHO WE ARE:
Head2Head is an established volunteer-run charity, currently based in Ashtead/Fetcham. We have been bringing the magic of the theatre to SEND schools and families since 2006. Our growing free family membership in Surrey currently stands at 400+ which is supplemented by 100 support networks and groups such as MENCAP, The Children’s Trust, as well as over 80 special schools and respite centres.
Since 2015, over 15,000 children have seen our live performances and, with a move to online shows this year, we are now reaching 1, 000 children a month. This rapid expansion includes production of interactive and sensory films, zoom sessions, multi-layered adventure games and historical dramas. Families have requested we maintain a dual-approach with live and online shows, meaning a permanent base is now a necessity for us to continue.
Feedback from families:
It was great to take my children to something where they all enjoyed it and no-one batted an eyelid at medical equipment beeping.
The actors and team had all taken the time to find out all the names of the children attending and quickly got to know, understand and work out their needs and limitations making it a very personal and special experience for everyone
lt’s a unique experience that feels specially tailored to our needs.
We were able to enjoy it instead of endure it.
OUR VISION:
Paying for a temporary venue in Fetcham is not a financially sustainable route especially as we are fast outgrowing the space it provides. The proposed centre will allow us to rehearse, film and store expanding wardrobe, props and sets, as well as evolve new initiatives to develop our services.
We are an inclusive charity, providing support and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy together.
We seek a multi-purpose sensory outreach centre designed to embrace and empower SEND [Special Educational Needs & Disabilities] families whilst supporting the local community with general use. We wish to purchase a site of approximately one hectare that will include parking suitable for disability vehicles and a garden area with trees. On it, we will create a centre built over 1,500 square metres with accessibility for wheelchair users and those with a range of disabilities.
Key activities:
· A permanent theatre/film production base for Head2Head Sensory theatre
· Drop-in centre for families, schools and children with SEND requirements
· Creative & fun learning through soft, messy, sensory & craft workshops
· Weekend drama classes, inclusive & accessible to all
· Family-orientated & SEND accessible café
· General community use e.g. fitness & leisure classes, room hire
· Open daily
SURREY’S SEND COMMUNITY:
There are over 23,000 school aged SEND children in Surrey. Our unique service-offering provides an experience otherwise unfulfilled. The site will provide comprehensive and much needed facilities across these families and further, complementing local special schools and disability groups. Facilities will be fully accessible including hoists and changing beds, ensuring adults with disabilities are able to contribute as volunteers, where previously restricted (we have a long list of eager applicants).
The building will place emphasis on lines, shapes, colour and texture with light and dark spaces – all designed to create distinct identities for each zone of the building and assist with orientation.
The drop-in centre will encourage creative, playful learning with provision for soft, messy and sensory play. woodland paths with wheelchair accessibility will supplement a sensory garden and sheltered picnic areas. A cafeteria will encourage networking where families can gain support and encouragement from others. Hoist and changing bed facilities will ensure that the centre is fully accessible.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Our Work Experience Programme aimed at SEND students transitioning from education, provides opportunities ranging from theatre craft to catering. We’re exploring partnerships with The Grange, The Orpheus Performing Arts Centre, Special Schools, Disability Groups and an Acting Agency. [Please click for feedback] The venue will allow us to further develop and embed this programme, allowing us to extend our support further across the Surrey community.
LOCAL COMMUNITY:
Spaces will be available for communal activities, such as fitness and leisure classes, performances, etc. The cafeteria will encourage inclusivity in the community.
